In-Situ® Inc. and CC Lynch Associates, Inc. Donate TROLL® 9500 Water Quality Instrument to Spring Lake Climate Station in San Marcos, Texas
FORT COLLINS, COLORADO, June 16, 2008 - In-Situ, Inc. and CC Lynch Associates, Inc. recently donated a TROLL® 9500 water quality instrument to the Spring Lake Climate Station in San Marcos, Texas. The Spring Lake Climate Station is a joint project of Texas Stream Team, River Systems Institute, and the Edwards Aquifer Research and Data Center at Texas State University-San Marcos. The Spring Lake Climate Station includes a meteorological tower as well as a newly established continuous water quality monitoring site.
"The TROLL 9500 water quality instrument donated by these companies will allow the Spring Lake Climate Station Program to integrate Spring Lake water quality and meteorological data," said Heidi Moltz, Statewide Volunteer Coordinator of Texas Stream Team and Spring Lake Climate Station Program Coordinator. "The Spring Lake Climate Station, including the continuous water quality monitoring site, will also serve as an in-the-field learning opportunity for the approximately 20,000 Aquarena Center educational tour participants at Spring Lake each year. The Spring Lake Climate Station Program would like to thank In-Situ and CC Lynch for the significant equipment contribution as well as the donation of time and professional expertise to make this station a reality."
Volunteers deployed the TROLL 9500 instrument, valued at $10,000, in early June 2008. The instrument continuously monitors dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, pH, temperature, and barometric pressure. The instrument will be used to conduct long-term water quality monitoring of Spring Lake, part of the Edwards Aquifer in south-central Texas. The Edwards Aquifer is a unique groundwater system and one of the most prolific artesian aquifers in the world. Spring Lake is home to eight federally listed threatened or endangered species, such as the San Marcos salamander. The San Marcos and Comal ecosystems including their spring runs and impounded headwaters have one of the greatest known diversities of organisms of any aquatic ecosystems in the southwestern United States according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The Spring Lake Climate Station Program aims to study climate and water quality relationships at Spring Lake. Researchers are collecting data to understand the microclimate of the Spring Lake area and to determine how the Spring Lake microclimate is related to the regional climate. Data from the TROLL 9500 instrument and the meteorological station will be regularly posted to the Texas State University-San Marcos website. Scientists, students, and visitors to the Aquarena Center in San Marcos, Texas can view data for research and educational purposes.
